'illumin is a smart lamp that allows you to interact with your memories through nostalgia. It acts as an ordinary lamp, with the ability to change colour and opacity. The PDLC layer has a differential opacity capability which reveals a showcase of past memories stored on an application.'
CONTEXT
In the UK, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in over 126,000 deaths being accounted for, leaving thousands of families without being able to attend funerals with close friends and families due to pandemic restrictions. This has left an unimaginable pain in the heart and mind up and down the country, causing an increase of 8.1% in severe mental health issues, with
69% of adults feel worried about the future of their life due to stress, anxiety and boredom.

This has caused a major problem in expressing feelings to others online. A loss of emotional connection to others around us has resulted in a suppression of emotions, especially nostalgia.
Nostalgia has become more prevalent and evident in everyday life, leaving many with the prospect that the future will be brighter. By bringing back nostalgia, many benefits such as stress reduction, happiness, warmth, and major life transitions can be achieved.
The lamp is a physical representation of our emotions, that help us to create memories, dictate actions, in a physical form. Users have the chance of using the product normally, and nostalgically, at the click of a button. This would become an everyday ritual to help bring positive nostalgia and memories to our minds.

The lamp features a PDLC glass film that allows a differential opacity screen to hide the memories of the user. The OLED casing film inside acts as a film roll, rotating periodically on a turntable. The speaker and PCB design allow for the tactile and haptic buttons on the product to function.
INTERNET OF SENSES
The design promotes sensory triggers for helping others to feel nostalgic. these can be added or removed on the app, while connected to the unit. Through haptics, visuals, tactile, and auditory feedback, this is achieved.
everyone’s emotional sensitivity and presence is subjective and different from one another, so providing the user with more control offers a suitable alternative. Controllable by physical touchpoints, including the haptic slider, tactile button, and in-app preferences, this can be achieved. Communication between user and device is important, so all methods of control were considered4.

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN
Morphological analysis in the form of design development and different attributes was used to ideate on the Internet of Senses, touchpoint, and affordances. The best 2 aspects were taken further and developed into a more detailed design based on feasibility, popularity and complexity.
